Moose

I drove around Maridalen last night with a full moon and no wind hoping to hear some owls. Well, I failed on that score but I did see my first moose (elg) of the winter. With the mild winter with little snow the moose have not been forced out of the forests in search of food and I haven't even seen any footprints of them in the snow let alone a live animal. I was therefore a little surprised, to say the least, when one ran out in front of me causing me to brake very hard. My attention had been distracted by a cat I saw sitting by the side of the road which started me thinking how much birds suffer due to cat predation when suddenly a rather larger mammal appeared. So my night ended with the score mammals 2 - 0 birds.
